Meet the Minds of Mindable: Marina, Communications Strategist

September 19, 2019

With over 70 team members worldwide, we are proud of our culturally diverse family. Currently, Mindable employs people in Canada, the USA, Mexico, India, the Philippines, Ukraine, and Australia.

Mindable’s headquarters is located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Meet Marina, our in-house Communications Strategist.

What were your career aspirations when you were younger?

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a writer. At one point I wanted to be a Veterinarian (that turned south when I dissected a fish in grade seven science class), but the constant theme in my life was that I wanted to write.

I used to write stories and screenplays as a kid, and I eventually pursued a Communications degree and wrote for publications such as YouthInk and Student Life Network. I’ve been writing professionally since the age of thirteen, and now here I am almost three years into a marketing/communications career!

What made you decide to apply for a job at Mindable?

I’ve always been super passionate about building community through social media, and so when I saw there was a Social Media Specialist role open here, I jumped at the chance. I also felt compelled to the fact that Mindable was a digital publishing company, so I could get my hands in a lot of editorial work here.

How long have you been working here?

I’ve almost been here for a full year which is crazy. I recently got promoted to be a Communications Strategist, so there has been so much growth and opportunity here in that amount of time.

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?

I have my hands in a lot of things here at Mindable, so each day can be very different which makes my job super exciting.

Some consistent elements of my job includes overseeing social media strategy and execution, working with customer service to ensure our community is being taken care of, working with the content team to execute editorial and SEO ideas, and tons of social media engagement.

We run over 14 social media accounts, so I am always ensuring we are on top of developing the very best content for our audiences. This ranges from graphics to videos, and much more!

What is your best digital marketing tip?

First and foremost, listen to your audience. Don’t just post blindly. Do your research and ask them what they want to see. Monitor trends and data so you can deliver value.

What would be your advice to professionals who aspire to work in digital marketing?

Try and take internships or freelance writing gigs while you are still in school, or even when you are out of school! Build your resume up as much as possible, and never stop learning new things.
